Just finished 4 weeks work with Tantrum Films who were shooting in the Isle of Man a WWII story. Based in Berlin and shooting on the Island took some convincing with Jurby Airfield being changed into a concentration camp. Where Hands Touch brings a romantic story about a bi-racial German teenage who befriends a member of the Hitler youth squad. Shooting with director Amma Asante who wrote the script was a pleasure and the whilst working on Location as a Location Assistant was challenging, I took great pleasure in working through many difficult tasks assigned to me.
The main crew shot in Belgium for several weeks before flying in on a private chartered plane. With the first location being Knocksharry. Farm yards have little power, but this locations team managed well in providing both heat and light around the farm for the two days. Yet to come was a more challenging task of getting power to the middle of Jurby Airfield.
Powering an airfield seems easy, couple of generators and you have power right!! Wrong. Generators make noise, films hate noise. Making sure that the generators were quiet enough and in suitable locations was a tough task but once located, the greater task was trying to make sure the power cables reached the needed locations for power to be distributed. Not easy controlling a crew who are cold, hungry and want nothing more then to charge their mobile phones up. But with limited power sources and the need for lights and heat being priority it came down to good old duck tape to seal some sockets up.
Ah well, that is the life of a Locations Assistant. Of now for the Christmas break followed by a New Years Party. Then finally a shoot in January to kick start 2017. Read more soon. Chow
